Local not-for-profit focused on supporting people in living their best lives
9,644,400 seconds! That’s how long the anticipation has been building for the big reveal of the newly-renovated Verna Belle’s Café! For those without their calculators handy, that’s almost 112 days!
But good news, the wait is over and as of 7 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, Verna Belle’s Café is open for business!
Getting out the door to go anywhere at my house is an extreme sport played over what feels like several hours. After all the organizing, dog feeding, kid dressing and teeth brushing, I may have five minutes to pick a clean outfit and splash on some make up for myself. It doesn’t seem to matter what time I get up—it always comes down to five minutes.
Festival of Trees entry wins two awards...again!
For the sixth straight year, a decorated tree donated by a Meadowlark team to the annual Festival of Trees Gala scored favorably with judges and event-goers. “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” decked with hand-made and store-bought ornaments representing places and businesses in Manhattan, received the Mayor’s Choice and People’s Choice awards.
Meadowlark is the new owner of Autumn Hills Memory Care Home.
Autumn Hills, a HomePlus model for senior living with a focus on memory care, currently has two locations; one in Manhattan and one in Riley. Effective Dec. 1, Meadowlark will be the owner and operator of both Autumn Hills locations.
A few weeks ago Murphy went through a stage where she didn’t want to leave daycare and Nanny who cares for her and her sister when I arrived to pick her up after work. Typically I can redirect her gently enough that it doesn’t turn into a fight. I will entice her with seeing daddy at home, playing with her toys or even getting a special treat after dinner.
HOGtoberfest boosts Good Samaritan Fund
The numbers are in! Well, most of them anyway. The fourth annual HOGtoberfest, a FOOD, FRIENDS and FUNdraising event to benefit the Good Samaritan Fund, prompted more than $27,000 in revenue. (A few gift-in-kind and expense amounts have not yet been reported.) This 4th annual hog wild happening was held at Cox Bros. BBQ, an event sponsor.
Adept at selling acreage and houses, five members of the local real estate community are selling the home-for-many mission of Meadowlark as contestants in a HOG & Kisses Contest. The candidates are asking their friends, family, co-workers, colleagues and Meadowlark stakeholders to help them raise money for the Good Samaritan Fund.
Two jewelry cases filled with gold, silver, rhinestones and turquoise were flowers to several bidding bees at Meadowlark Foundation’s 3rd annual auction of furniture and other household goods. The event took place Sept. 23 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
Resident ambassador Sue Hunt, who volunteered to keep an eye on the cases prior to the auction’s start, reported there were many requests to land on one piece in particular, a Navajo-made squash blossom necklace of turquoise and
silver.
The renovation progress in Verna Belle’s continues to move forward and remain on schedule. For those who are curious about the work that has been completed so far, here’s a peek behind the plastic!
Summer as we know it is over (the first day of Fall technically isn’t until Sept. 22), and school has started again. This change ignites an almost daily question at my house, “Is it Halloween today?”
Fall brings many wonderful things, including Halloween. Beautiful Autumn leaves, cooler temperatures and everything pumpkin. Murphy and Eilish have big plans this Halloween. Murphy plans to be a witch, “Not a nice witch, Mom. A SCARY witch!”
