Beautiful scenery, tours of ghost towns that at one time had booming economies, fascinating turn-of-the-century stories of the Colorado gold rush and a voyage over mountains and canyons on a locomotive circa 1880, were a few of the attractions on the Colorado Excursion.

Travelers departed Manhattan, Kan. at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 13, for an eight-day jaunt across the Rocky mountains.

You’re invited to come enjoy pictures and stories about the adventure at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Community Room. Refreshments will be served.

Imogene Lamb Bolls, the late wife of Meadowlark Hills resident, Nathan Bolls, had five goals in life; to be a loving and devoted wife, a loving and patient mother, a trusted friend, a successful university professor of literature and writing and a published poet of note. She achieved all of these a quite high level.

Retirees take advantage of auditing college courses

Looking back to my years spent inside the classroom, I am beginning to have textbook withdrawals (however, I don’t miss how much they cost). It has been just over seven months since I was sitting in the traditional classroom, but oh, how I miss the debates, late night cram sessions and wondering how I would apply what I was learning to my everyday life.

Q: What type of items can I donate to the Meadowlark Hills Market?

With the Meadowlark Hills Market fast approaching this is an appropriate question!

The Meadowlark Hills Market accepts a wide variety of items such as gently-used furniture, vintage clothing, small appliances, handmade items, home décor, pictures, painting, books, records, holiday decorations, etc. The only thing we do not ask for is any clothing that was produced after 1980. We will be having clothing drive shortly after the Market and will be accepting these items at this time.

Q: Is it okay to remove barn swallow’s nests?

Again, thank you for the diversity of questions submitted. I learn from each one.

Although the barn swallow can create quite a mess, it is actually illegal to remove their nests. The following is what I have learned about these creatures and their nests:

Education was considered highly important in the eyes of John Mann’s late wife, Phyllis Marie Walsten Mann.

Phyllis attended a one-room country school in Reno County. She completed her high school education at Hutchinson High School and then completed a pre-nursing program at the community college. In 1951, she received her bachelors of science in nursing from the University of Kansas, then was employed at KU Medical Center. She took a short leave of absence in 1961 to earn her masters of nursing from the University of Washington in Seattle.

A few weeks ago I answered a question about where I had been while I was out of the office and what I had been working on. I explained the work I have been doing in writing a manual and recently giving a presentation with Pam Kramer, the President of ITP International Inc. Pam is a successful performance consultant, career specialist and executive coach with a master's degree in Counseling in Career and Organizational Development.
