Happy, the HOGtoberfest mascot, was busy last week, attending meetings with me and visiting participants in this year’s HOG & Kisses Contest. She did all she could to encourage the candidates to continue to raise support and awareness for Meadowlark Hills Foundation’s Good Samaritan Fund, leading up to HOGtoberfest on Thursday, Oct. 29, at Cox Bros. BBQ, 223 McCall Road.

  • Deck the Halls: Recent donations boost Meadowlark Hills’ Art Collection

By Becky Fitzgerald on September 23, 2015

The calendar says it’s September, but for the past several months, Art Committee members could be convinced it’s Christmas time. Since last spring, various potential donations of fine art and decorative art (framed posters, etc.) have been presented at each of our first Friday-of-the-month meetings for consideration. I believe I speak for a majority of members in saying that it’s been a treat to examine and/or research the proposed gifts.

  • Sold!

By Becky Fitzgerald on September 10, 2015

Meadowlark Hills resident Sue Hunt held up an adjustable cane decorated with hand-painted roses, and the knot in my stomach began to unravel. Meadowlark Hills Foundation’s first public auction of donated household items had lured several capable volunteers and a large crowd to Pottorf Hall in Cico Park on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and the raised hands and nodding heads that were prompted by auctioneer Vern Gannon did much to calm my nerves.

Please mark your calendars for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Cico Park’s Pottorf Hall. Proceeds benefit the Meadowlark Hills Foundation’s Good Samaritan Fund, which assists residents in Meadowlark Hills healthcare households who have outlived their financial resources. Vern Gannon of Gannon Auctions is donating his time and that of his staff members so that more auction revenue will go toward the fund.

By Becky Fitzgerald on July 23, 2015

John Pence, a frequent visitor at Meadowlark Hills, was in an antique mall in downtown Salina, Kan., last year when he uncovered buried treasure of sorts. A framed aquatint entitled “San Jose” by Ted Hawkins caught his eye, and he was fairly certain he had seen the image somewhere before.

  • Meadowlark Hills Turns 35!

By Becky Fitzgerald on May 14, 2015

Kermit the frog said it’s not easy being green, but Meadowlarkians aren’t likely to share his opinion during the first week of June. An emerald anniversary celebration is planned Monday, June 1, through Friday, June 5, to mark the 35 years that have passed since Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community was formerly dedicated on June 8, 1980. Residents and staff will be seen wearing green “Celebrating 35 Years” shirts, and several are already drinking from green tumblers now available at Verna Belle’s Cafe for $5.
