Speedy PD Race for Parkinson's Disease: 17th Annual Event

Local not-for-profit focused on supporting people in living their best lives
An unusual achiever with a lifetime of service and generosity to her credit was honored Monday, May 11, at the 13th annual Legacy Society Banquet sponsored by Meadowlark Hills Foundation.
Kermit the frog said it’s not easy being green, but Meadowlarkians aren’t likely to share his opinion during the first week of June. An emerald anniversary celebration is planned Monday, June 1, through Friday, June 5, to mark the 35 years that have passed since Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community was formerly dedicated on June 8, 1980. Residents and staff will be seen wearing green “Celebrating 35 Years” shirts, and several are already drinking from green tumblers now available at Verna Belle’s Cafe for $5.
The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation’s goal of raising $200,000 for local not-for-profit organizations was surpassed on Grow Green Match Day, with 21 gifts benefiting Meadowlark Hills adding to the effort. According to the event website, GrowGreenManhattan.com, 1,331 gifts totaling $232,517.36 will support organizations which have an endowment fund with GMCF. Local businessman and former Meadowlark Hills board member Phil Howe again agreed to provide matching funds, so each organization’s donation total will be increased 50%.
Meadowlark Hills’ Home Health companions are driving clients in safety and comfort thanks to a recent gift from Meadowlark Hills resident Robin Higham. His 1999 Oldsmobile 88 was recently added to our community’s fleet of vehicles and has become one of three cars assigned to Home Health. “We call it Red Robin because it’s red and it was donated by Robin Higham,” said Kelly Miller, Home Health Leader, of the four-door sedan. “People who ride in it tell us it’s very comfy. It has added to our flexibility and independence to meet the needs of our clients on their time schedule.”
K-State’s McCain Auditorium has had a long association with Meadowlark Hills, and Friends of McCain would like to recognize residents and the organization for your patronage and sponsorship of the annual Performance Series. To say “thank you,” a Happy Hour (and a half) is planned for residents prior to the last show of the 2014-15 season, “Michael Feinstein: The Sinatra Project”. Please join Todd Holmberg, McCain Auditorium director, other McCain staff and Friends of McCain board members, including Becky Fitzgerald, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Meadowlark Hills Foundation has enthusiastically accepted an invitation to grow our “green” by participating in the 3rd annual Grow Green Match Day on Wednesday, April 22. This event holds incredible opportunity for Meadowlark Hills Foundation. On that day, the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation will match donations made to an endowment fund we have with GMCF — our long-term savings — and we could potentially receive more than a $10,000 match.
2015 marks the 10th anniversary of Symphony in the Flint Hills, and Meadowlark Hills again has secured a block of reserved seats, which are near the stage. This year’s event is set for Saturday, June 13, at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Chase County, which was the location when the event debuted in 2006. Performing with the Kansas City Symphony in honor of this milestone year is special guest artist Lyle Lovett, a four-time Grammy award winner.
Oink! Have you heard the noise about HOGtoberfest? Not only do we have the chance to support the Good Samaritan Fund by eating tasty barbecue at Cox Bros. BBQ on Oct. 16 – a portion of the restaurant’s proceeds will be donated to the Fund – but we also may donate to the Fund by participating in a HOG & Kisses Contest which began Oct. 1.
For six years, Buttonwood Art Space in Kansas City, Mo., has supported the Flint Hills area of Kansas and its unique place in our greater regional ecosystem through an annual art benefit. Visions of the Flint Hills Art Benefit and Sale is a juried exhibit featuring art of the Flint Hills. Sweeping paintings of sky and native prairie grass dominate the show, but sculpture pieces, fiber works, fused glass and photos also are featured. The art is on exhibit each October and November, in Buttonwood Art Space.
Between 2007 and 2010, the Kansas Sampler Foundation sponsored contests to determine the top 8 Wonders of Kansas. More than 100,000 people voted to determine winners and finalists in the categories of Architecture, Art, Commerce, Cuisine, Customs, Geography, History, People, and overall. Residents and Passport members are invited to join Amanda Rall and Becky Fitzgerald for a trip to Lucas, Kan., for tours of the 4th Wonder in the Art category: the Garden of Eden and the Grassroots Art Center. This artsy adventure is set for Thursday, May 16.
