If you lived for a significant portion of your life in a rural community in Riley or Pottawatomie County and are willing to be interviewed by a team of three to four K-State students about your experiences in those communities, we need your help! A KSU Professor, Matt Sanderson, PhD is looking for the opportunity to provide engaged learning for his Rural Sociology students. We want you to tell them of your experiences in those communities.

Beware of Scam!

A couple weeks ago, I shared about the National Do No Call Registry. Since then, a few residents and neighbors have reported being contacted by scammers via telephone. Remember, scammers will say anything and their goal is to get you to say “yes.”

I saw a yellowed leaf fall yesterday, just the barest ripple of the coming inevitable avalanche of change. Those of us who live with the seasons know the truth of the remark once made by the writer M.C. Richards: “Whatever has form is in the process still of being formed. Form is never fixed.”

When you pass by Leo Glen on the way to the pond, you will see a drift of yellow made by the many different type of sunflowers. Some of the common ones: the Maximilian’s stiff, plains, willow leaf and Jerusalem artichoke. To me they are all sunny happy signs of fall. I saw a number of Monarch butterflies flying from flower to flower to get the needed nectar for their long migratory to Mexico.

2nd annual HOGtoberfest to benefit Good Samaritan Fund

Fiends of Meadowlark Hills have a fun and tasty opportunity to support the Meadowlark Hills Foundation’s Good Samaritan Fund when the doors to Cox Bros. BBQ open at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29. Brothers Bud and Bobby Cox, sons of Meadowlark Hills residents Newton and Ellie Cox, pledge to donate 10% of that day’s proceeds to the Fund.

Technically it’s time to go digital!

It was announced a while ago that Cox Communications would be going digital for all television services. For those of us who don’t have a digital box for our cable already (this is something you would have had to sign up and pay extra for directly through Cox), then we’ll need a new “mini box” to continue receiving our television channels.

Breakfast is served! Many mornings I find as many as five deer eating corn at the feeder near Bayer Pond. They have come to associate the sound of the feeder slinging corn (each morning at 7 a.m.) with a favorite breakfast.

If you approach from down wind and move very slowly they will permit you to get as close as 25 feet as this beautiful doe and three month old fawn did to me.

The IL Resident Council wishes to remind all residents that this is the time of year we recognize the work of our outstanding staff here at Meadowlark Hills. As you know, there is a no tipping policy and our way of expressing our thanks to them is to give generously to our Appreciation Fund.

You should have received your letter from the Committee by this time. The deadline for your contribution will be Monday, Nov. 9, through Wednesday, Nov. 11. We encourage you to remember the many ways in which the staff has served you and give generously.

The calendar says it’s September, but for the past several months, Art Committee members could be convinced it’s Christmas time. Since last spring, various potential donations of fine art and decorative art (framed posters, etc.) have been presented at each of our first Friday-of-the-month meetings for consideration. I believe I speak for a majority of members in saying that it’s been a treat to examine and/or research the proposed gifts.
