I had always heard Meadowlark Hills is for older adults, but when I moved in, I found out Meadowlark Hills keeps us young.

Oink! I’m pleased to see dollars filling the jars of our HOG & Kisses Contest candidates, which is part of our six-week HOGTOBERFEST celebration. After a month of voting, here’s how our potential kissers rank:
1. Dave Rogers, representing First Christian Church. Dave is co-owner at Burnett Automotive and is a board member at First Christian
2. Kyle Olson, representing First Lutheran Church. Kyle is Director of Spiritual Growth at FLC.
3. Rev. Cam McConnell of First Presbyterian Church
Several weeks ago, the possibility of purchasing more grocery-style carts was presented to us. We currently have five of these carts and an anticipated need for five more. The projected total cost is $1,250.
These grocery-style carts allow the user to keep shopping bags at table height, thus making it easy to roll the cart to the kitchen counter and unload shopping bags or other items without needing to bend over to lift the bags. Some residents also use these carts to tote supplies from one place to another within the apartment building.
Switch-a-roo!
Well, Magye and I are getting settled in our new space after the big move Friday, Sept. 16. For those who missed it (we moved rather quickly!), here’s the scoop on who is where and why they are there.
Due to constant and rapid changes in the industry in which we serve, leaders at Meadowlark are always looking for opportunities to leverage ourselves to better care for more people in the Manhattan area and surrounding community. One of the areas of growth we’ve identified is within our Home Health agency.
Eighty-six. 486. $414. $8,671. Put these numbers together, and they add up to another successful Meadowlark Hills benefit auction. On Saturday, Sept. 10, auctioneer Vern Gannon and his staff sold 486 items/groups of items for $8,671 in merchandise. Add the $414 of revenue generated at the Auction Café, and the event total is slightly more than $9000! The event was held in the Utopia Room at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, a larger space than our 2015 location (Pottorf Hall).

The concrete project has been slowed by rain but is moving forward. The driveway to the Park entrance is open from the West side parking lot. We will be finishing half of the resident reserved parking and carport (weather permitting) this week. While it is curing, we will start demolition of the concrete in front of Honstead up to the Lyle entrance. This area will be closed to all traffic during this time.
Goodbye summer, hello flu season!
The leaves are changing, the air is turning crisp and the next stop is flu season and even better, flu shots! Two Flu Shot Clinics have been scheduled for Independent Living residents. Flu shots given at these on-campus clinics will be billed to your insurance. There will be at least two nurses at each Flu Shot Clinic to assist in administering the vaccine. Join us for a clinic at whichever date and time listed below works best for you.
3rd annual HOGtoberfest to raise money, awareness for Good Samaritan Fund
Friends of Meadowlark Hills have a fun and tasty opportunity to support the Meadowlark Hills Foundation’s Good Samaritan Fund when the doors to Cox Bros. BBQ open at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13. Brothers Bud and Bobby Cox, sons of Meadowlark Hills resident Ellie Cox, pledge to donate 10% of that day’s proceeds to the Fund.
Speedy PD 2016 — A Race to Remember!
And the numbers are in for The Speedy PD Race for Parkinson’s Disease that was held at Tuttle Creek State Park in Manhattan, Kan., on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016! Despite a rainy start to the morning (you may recall the storm that rolled through around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27), the weather turned beautiful by 7 a.m. and made being outdoors for the race and party-like atmosphere very enjoyable.
