Our grocery-style shopping cart fund continues to grow. The $600 currently raised means we are half way to the goal of $1,250. We hope you will want to help us complete the project with a donation, so that our rolling stock can increase from five to a total of 10 carts.

Exciting news!

Things are busy at the Duggan household – and they are going to get busier! This week we are heading to New York City (Brooklyn, to be exact!) to meet our three-month-old niece, Gia Grace. Murphy talks fondly of Baby Gia and is incredibly excited to meet her in person. In addition, going to Brooklyn means we get to enjoy New York pizza, bagels and a precious time with our family.

                       Our palette of fall!

                       Gently falling, fading—gone

                       Save in grateful eyes.

Haiku poem by NJB

The first greenings of spring, in their endless variety of forms, represent a “color of relief.” We sense the promise of consistently warmer days and a new growing season. The beautiful turning of leaves in fall seems one of the consolation prizes we are given to soften the dread of winter.

On the last day of summer I took a walk to the pond to write a farewell to the season and put the journal in a plastic bag and a new plastic box so it will be ready for winter winds and snow.

If you journey to the area, please take a moment to write your thoughts in it. On my way home, I took the quarry trail. The tall grass is really tall, Big Blue Indian and switch grass are all on display and some are blooming.

Oink! I’m pleased to see dollars filling the jars of our HOG & Kisses Contest candidates, which is part of our six-week HOGTOBERFEST celebration. After a month of voting, here’s how our potential kissers rank:

3.   Rev. Cam McConnell of First Presbyterian Church

Several weeks ago, the possibility of purchasing more grocery-style carts was presented to us. We currently have five of these carts and an anticipated need for five more. The projected total cost is $1,250.

These grocery-style carts allow the user to keep shopping bags at table height, thus making it easy to roll the cart to the kitchen counter and unload shopping bags or other items without needing to bend over to lift the bags. Some residents also use these carts to tote supplies from one place to another within the apartment building.

Switch-a-roo!

Well, Magye and I are getting settled in our new space after the big move Friday, Sept. 16. For those who missed it (we moved rather quickly!), here’s the scoop on who is where and why they are there.

Due to constant and rapid changes in the industry in which we serve, leaders at Meadowlark are always looking for opportunities to leverage ourselves to better care for more people in the Manhattan area and surrounding community. One of the areas of growth we’ve identified is within our Home Health agency.

Eighty-six. 486. $414. $8,671. Put these numbers together, and they add up to another successful Meadowlark Hills benefit auction. On Saturday, Sept. 10, auctioneer Vern Gannon and his staff sold 486 items/groups of items for $8,671 in merchandise. Add the $414 of revenue generated at the Auction Café, and the event total is slightly more than $9000! The event was held in the Utopia Room at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, a larger space than our 2015 location (Pottorf Hall).

The concrete project has been slowed by rain but is moving forward. The driveway to the Park entrance is open from the West side parking lot. We will be finishing half of the resident reserved parking and carport (weather permitting) this week. While it is curing, we will start demolition of the concrete in front of Honstead up to the Lyle entrance. This area will be closed to all traffic during this time.
