Local not-for-profit focused on supporting people in living their best lives
As some of you may have noticed, Pizazz and Flair have welcomed two new stylists in the last few weeks, Shannon Creagh and Kathy Shawver.
We have many “snowbirds” on campus during the summer. This led me, during 21 and 24 January, to hike every street and trail on our campus except for the line of trees on the ridge between Meadowlark Valley and the cottages along the east side of Meadowlark Road. I was involved in the “Sport of Kings:” a scouting and counting venture meant to impress all of us with the number of wild creatures with whom we share our campus during the “growing season.”

Now it can be told. Instead of a respectable government para-legal, I should have been an entertainer. The ham in me adored the thunderous applause.
It was in the days when CBS Television had its first three-camera show. It was taped and would circulate for two years. Very big deal.
I was invited to be a jury member on the new show called “Face the Facts”, about trials. The director told us: “This is for entertainment, not a legal education. Let them enjoy it.” He meant our studio audience as well as the television watchers.
Those sturdy conifer and deciduous trees gracing our Campus and Natural Area prove each winter, by standing and taking the full brunt of whatever winter throws at them, that they are tough cookies. Some of how they do this is understood, but the adaptive mechanisms described below will safeguard trees only so far into the realm of freezing temperatures. A reason exists for the “tree line” across northern Canada.
Christmas Carol-sel: Bringing the Pages to Life!
It’s time to get signed up for the 2016 Christmas Carousel, a holiday party for independent living residents and Passport members! This year’s theme is Christmas Carol-sel and during the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 14, you’ll be diving into the classic Charles Dickens’ tale of A Christmas Carol.
The third time was definitely a charm. By all measures, the 3rd annual HOGTOBERFEST, a FOOD, FRIENDS and FUNdraising event to benefit the Good Samaritan Fund, was a success. Some gift-in-kind and expense amounts are still outstanding, but this year’s revenue was nearly $18,400, a significant increase over the nearly $6000 in revenue realized from the 2015 event.

To the person who borrowed the green basket that sits on the fireplace, used for return books, please return it to the Library.
I would also like to ask that the front pages of the Manhattan Mercury and the Wall Street Journal not be removed from the Library. They are everyone’s enjoyment. Thanks!
On Thoughts About Presidents
Submitted by Helen Roser
In this season of presidential campaigns, I remember my favorite president, Harry Truman. He came into office after President Roosevelt’s death when we were engaged in World War II. His courage and strength of character brought the war to an earlier end. He took his duties very seriously and had a sign on his desk that said: The Buck Stops Here. He was called “Give’em hell Harry.”
Trucks, noise and concrete – oh my!
It seems like we’ve all been living with the noise and inconvenience of the concrete work for a while now, but as I walk from the furthest distance on campus to my office I remind myself that a few weeks of displacement is completely bearable compared to falling forever into a cavernous pot hole! Nonetheless, we are well overdue for a concrete-work update.
Harriet HOG, cuddled in resident Sue Hunt’s arms, prompted several patrons to praise her suitability for the 3rd annual HOG & Kisses Contest on Oct. 13 during HOGTOBERFEST at Cox Bros. BBQ. After about six weeks of campaigning, Rev. Cam McConnell earned the privilege of smooching Harriet by raising $3954 in donations, a higher total than any previous kisser. Meadowlark Hills Foundation awaits a few more event numbers, so please check a future Messenger for a full report. Proceeds benefit the Good Samaritan Fund.
I am truly humbled and honored to have the opportunity to be a part of Meadowlark Hills.
