Outside is the best side!
In April 2015, the Duggans moved into our first house. The family’s first mission? Grow grass. Our new backyard was an overwhelming mountain of mud. I grew up in the country and there, growing grass wasn’t a priority. If we had it – great! If we didn’t – less to mow. Edward grew up in the city without a yard. Fast forward to 2015 and two newbie homeowners are standing in the lawn and garden section at Home Depot, heads tilted in confusion.
Meadowlark Hills resident Sue Hunt held up an adjustable cane decorated with hand-painted roses, and the knot in my stomach began to unravel. Meadowlark Hills Foundation’s first public auction of donated household items had lured several capable volunteers and a large crowd to Pottorf Hall in Cico Park on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and the raised hands and nodding heads that were prompted by auctioneer Vern Gannon did much to calm my nerves.

The Prairie Star renovations are just around the corner! Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 21, and will last approximately six to seven weeks. During the entire length of the construction, Prairie Star dining room and the Manhattan Room will be closed.

Since mid-April when the Ruby-throated hummingbirds arrived in our neighborhood they are so fun to watch. So small they are! Their amazing tiny bodies and wings move so rapidly. A recent article in the September-October 2015 Audubon Magazine gives interesting information:
Meadowlark Hills Goes to Speedy PD!
Congratulations to Michelle Haub, Parkinson’s Program Leader at Meadowlark Hills, on another successful Speedy PD Race for Parkinson’s Disease! More than 700 people participated in our seventh annual event and the race raised over $60K in cash and in-kind donations to benefit the Meadowlark Hills Parkinson’s Program.
Let’s eat!
It’s a little known secret that there are not two, not three, but five dining options at Meadowlark Hills! I am of course talking about Prairie Star Restaurant which hosts three of our dining choices (dine in, carry out or delivery). The fourth is Verna Belle’s Cafe – a great place to pick up a specialty coffee or delicious breakfast burrito (the special on Wednesdays!) and the fifth is the Kansas Room Pub & Lounge.

It is important that visitors in our natural area record in the Gazebo Logbook whatever they see during their time spent there. It is especially important that they record any species, movement, habits or occurrences that they feel is unusual.

Because our typical lifestyle gradually has become more urban and more—and—more indoors, people have increasingly lost that sense of what to fear “in the wild.”
For our purposes, two or three easy rules will most always suffice. I know that my chances of being molested by deer, coyote, raccoon, skunk, opossum or leprechaun; by soaring bald eagle, gliding turkey vulture, or flapping heron; or of having a bat fly down and get tangled up in my hair (no snickers, please) are somewhere down there with winning the lottery.
