The Page Turners Book Club is once again reading books that have been adapted into movies. The first selection is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. This compelling nonfiction work tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became the first “immortal” human cell line and helped revolutionize modern medicine.

The book explores the scientific breakthroughs made possible by HeLa cells, while also examining the ethical and racial issues surrounding their use and the lasting impact on Lacks’ family. The story was later adapted into an HBO film starring Oprah Winfrey.
