It’s a longstanding tradition for friends and family of brides-to-be and expectant mothers to celebrate an upcoming wedding or baby’s arrival with a gift-giving party commonly called a “shower”. Borrowing that idea at the suggestion of a resident, Becky Fitzgerald, Brook Marcotte and Jayme Minton will serve as hostesses at a shower for our expanding Verna Belle’s Café at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the Community Room. Festive treats will replace the usual Coffee Corner fare.
   Much like a bridal or baby registry, a list of desired goods with prices will be available, and party-goers are invited to make a contribution to cover the cost of an item or items on the list. The wish list includes dinnerware, flatware, cookware, chairs, etc. Samples of the dinnerware and flatware will be on display as well as café finishes, such as paint colors and a countertop option. A chair or two will be available for testing.
   Five couples previously offered major gifts to assist with the cost of renovation and expansion. (A construction crew began on Aug. 21.) In addition, a memorial gift will allow the purchase of artwork to brighten the space. It was suggested at a focus group several months ago that a shower would give many others an opportunity to contribute, at a variety of price points, to the project. Donations are tax-deductible.
