Ask Annie!

Q: Why is the lid on the recycling dumpster by Assisted Living entrance locked? It would be more convenient if I could throw all of my recyclables in there at once instead of having to do it a handful at a time.

I actually have a few different answers for this one. The recycling service we use does not accept bags of recyclables. Once our recyclables reach the plant they are separated out by hand into their respective categories (i.e. aluminum, plastic, paper, etc). Having your recyclables tied in a sack or bag slows this process and makes it more difficult for the people who sort. Having the container unlocked also make it easier for people to dump regular garbage in with the recycling. This may occur when it is dark outside and the markings are not easily read or when the actual garbage dumpster gets full. Due to these two reason, Howie’s has asked that we keep the dumpster locked.

If you are wanting to recycle a large number of items at the same time, you are more than welcome to bring a bag or sack of recyclables to the mini dumpsters behind the elevators in the main building and empty the contents of the bag or sack in one of the mini dumpsters. Also for those of you living in the cottages you are eligible for the discounted rate through Howie’s for curb side pick-up, you can contact them to set up your service. We just ask they you don’t actually leave your recyclables in a bag or sack and place it in a dumpster.

Thanks for another great question, and please keep them coming!
