Q: Can you tell us about the ice sculptures we have been seeing more and more of at events?

The ice sculptures at our events are actually done here, in house by Chef John Gasser. John came to Meadowlark Hills a couple years ago and has truly made a huge impact on our Food and Beverage team with his amazing abilities to organize events, teach and mentor staff, prepare delicious food, and most recently, sculpt some pretty incredible things out of  ice.

Q: What vaccinations do I need and how often should I get them?

submitted by Jennifer Ellifritt, APRN

The flu vaccine should be received yearly. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends it be received by October as it can take up to two weeks for the antibodies to develop to protect you from getting the flu. The peak flu season is typically in January so this will give your body plenty of time to prepare.

The Department of Kinesiology at Kansas State University is looking for research subjects to complete a study on lung functioning as we age. The participants would need to visit the Kinesiology lab (in Ahearn Fieldhouse) for an initial visit, complete four weeks of in-home breathing exercises, and finish with a final visit to the lab. The in-home breathing exercises would be done with a non-invasive handheld trainer, completing 60 breaths per day, inhaling against the trainer. The researchers are looking for interested individuals (men or women) who are 65 years or older.

Q: Why are the large garbage and recycling bins outside, behind the kitchen area, not covered?  It seems like a lot of trash blows out during the day and night allowing trash to go all over the campus (especially in the area of the medical clinic).
