Meadowlark Hills will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house celebration for the new Meadowlark Hills Therapy Suite in Bramlage House, the transitional-care household, on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m.
The Meadowlark Hills Therapy Suite focuses on occupational therapy for guests in transition from hospital to home. The suite features a kitchen, dining room, laundry area, bedroom area and grocery store. Here, guests are encouraged to complete daily activities in a home-like environment to make their transition back to their own home as seamless as possible.

Meadowlark Hills received a charitable gift of $1.1 million in July 2011 from the estate of Dr. Gary Boyd Rogers. This is the single, largest gift Meadowlark Hills has ever received.
Rogers’ became acquainted with Meadowlark Hills when his parents, Ralph and Dora Rogers, moved to the campus shortly after Ralph’s retirement in 1974. His sisters, Mary and May, spoke highly of the care their parents received during the time they spent at Meadowlark Hills. During their visit in June of this year, Mary and May were eager to spend time with the front-line staff that made their parents stay at MLH great.

Meadowlark Hills’ Health Services Administrator, Heather Generali, has been elected to the Kansas Coalition on Culture Change Board of Directors.
Generali has been a member of the coalition since January 2011 as a representative for Meadowlark Hills. The group is working to collaborate with other organizations or affiliations that have the same mission and values as Meadowlark Hills. Both organizations strive to find effective ways of dispersing information around the state of Kansas about culture change.

Meadowlark Hills has named Robert Dickson the new Vice President of Clinical Services.
Dickson comes to Meadowlark Hills from St. Joseph of the Pines, one of the premier retirement communities in North Carolina. He came to Meadowlark Hills a year ago as a nurse consultant and has been successful in increasing organizational skills, leadership skills and clinical competency.

Meadowlark Hills hosted Dr. Richard Taylor for his “Humanizing Dementia Care” workshop on Thursday, August 25 and Friday, August, 26. Dr. Taylor is the author of Alzheimer’s From the Inside Out and has developed a practical workshop designed for caregivers of people with living with dementia.
Taylor has been living with the diagnosis for more than eight years. His presentations are known to be high energy, challenging and supportive. He speaks to others about his own experiences with dementia and is often telling others he is “running as fast as he can away from his future.”

The Speedy PD Race for Parkinson’s Disease will be held at Tuttle Creek State Park in Manhattan, Kansas, on Saturday, August 27, 2011. The 5K Run/Walk, 10K Run and UMB half-mile family fun run/walk is presented by UMB Bank and will benefit the Meadowlark Hills Parkinson Fund.
“Our Manhattan banks have employees who have been personally impacted by this deadly disease. We felt a strong urge to try to make a difference and be part of a great event to raise the awareness of Parkinson’s. I suppose it didn’t hurt that I’m a runner and I really like the way this race was operated in the past,” said Terry Harts, UMB Bank President.

Art Loub, long-time community member and former Kansas State University Foundation President, received the Manhattan Legacy Award on Tuesday, June 7, at Meadowlark Hills.
Nelson Galle, former chairman of the Kansas Board of Regents, was the speaker for the evening. “I think one of the best things President Duane Acker did for K-State was hire Art from Michigan State University because he brought structure and professionalism to the K-State Foundation. In addition to his major contributions to Kansas State University, he has given his time and talent to the greater Manhattan community,” Galle said.

The annual Meadowlark Hills Board Appreciation and awards banquet was held Wednesday evening, July 14, and honored John Walters as the 2010 recipient of the Johanna Lyle Excellence in Service award. Walters is a member of the Board of Trustees at Meadowlark Hills, where he also served as previous chair. Walters and his wife, Cheryl, were also co-chairs of the Steering Committee for the Capital Campaign “Our Home, Our Health, Our Future.” The campaign helped fund a Community Center that includes a fitness center, restaurant and cafe and also helped fund Bramlage and Wroten Houses, Meadowlark’s Transitional Households. The campaign raised more than $3.5 million.

The first annual Speedy PD 5K/10K and Block Walk was held Saturday, Aug. 29, at Meadowlark Hills and helped raised over $11,000 toward the Meadowlark Parkinson Fund. Kansas State University Animal Science and Industry provided the race course through the pasture. Over 200 participants and 100 volunteers attended. There were also over 40 sponsors, including The Hearing Doctors of Kansas, Wichita Parkinson Center and Meadowlark Wellness Partners.

Kansas limestone will be turned into fine art when local and area sculptors, painters and carving enthusiasts converge in Manhattan for a stone carving workshop, sponsored by Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community and the Kansas Sculptors Association. This free event is planned for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20, at Meadowlark Hills. Demonstrations begin at 9 a.m. both days in the paved lot west of Meadowlark’s apartment tower.
