Parkinson's Awareness Month: Let's Learn a Little!
March 28, 2024
Local not-for-profit focused on supporting people in living their best lives
True appreciation I always “appreciated” my Mom. I appreciated her cooking for me. I appreciated her paying for my activities. I appreciated her for listening to me when I need someone to talk to. I appreciated her for knowing exactly what to say when I was upset. I appreciated her support and I appreciated her hugs.
Let’s Pig Out! Today is the day! It’s time to Pig Out for Parkinson’s at Cox Bros. BBQ to support the Meadowlark Hills Parkinson’s Program. Join us as we raise awareness for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Michelle Haub, Parkinson’s Program Leader, and the members of our Parkinson’s Core Team will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4:30 to 9 p.m. to educate people who stop by about PD and the services offered by the Parkinson’s Program. Cox Bros. will donate 10 percent of the sales from this day to the program.
Can we do it all? Meadowlark Hills is each resident’s home. The organization strives to provide high-quality care and customer service for those who live at Meadowlark Hills while creating a welcoming and comfortable environment an individual can call home and staff can take pride in their work. But is Meadowlark Hills always able to take care of any resident needs? The short answer is no – not if the clinical acuity of a resident is too high for a skilled nursing or transitional care facility to manage.
It’s all about communication! Communication is important for any relationship, professional or personal, to be successful. However, in our fast-paced world, it is sometimes hard to communicate as often or thoroughly as is required.
The fire alarm is sounding…now what? Fire alarm testing and procedure drills fall into the category of things that are super inconvenient and irritating – that is until the day comes that it is not a drill. Then we appreciate the fine-tuned, functioning and loud alarm for alerting us to an emergency. This week the fire alarms went off and it was not a drill – yikes! The issue turned out to be minor and easily resolved; however, this incident prompted the question of what happens if there is a real fire?
Live Well Communication, what does it mean? For those of you who attended Town Meeting on Monday, you heard me speak about a letters from Brewster Place in Topeka regarding their Live Well at Home Program. It’s my understanding that this communication went out to many people in the Manhattan community, including residents of Meadowlark Hills.
Call the nurse! One of the features available to independent living residents at Meadowlark Hills is access to a pull-cord system that pages an on-duty nurse in the skilled nursing area. When the pull cord is activated, the nurse will respond to the apartment, cottage or duplex to assess the resident’s urgent need.
Why the Watermelon? Meadowlark Hills loves art. Not to say that each individual resident loves art, but the organization as a whole appreciates many types of art displayed throughout our campus. There are three unique pieces of art located outside the Community Room. If you visit that area, you will find portraits of people who have played a significant role in the history of Meadowlark Hills. One is of the Sloan family, one is of our former CEO Steve Shields and the third depicts Jim Morrison with a watermelon. Wait…what? A watermelon?
Love & Lo Mein I love Valentine’s Day. Mostly because I love to send Valentine’s to my family and friends – this holiday makes for a great excuse to show the ones you love that you are thinking about them.
